The Intervention
Monday through Thursday came and went, the cycle Kai had become accustomed to never once wavering. He and Reita would meet up in the library at lunch, talk, read, and then by the end of the thirty minute free period, Reita would say or do something that ended with Kai being a wide eyed piece of blushing flesh, his mind constantly reverting back to that playful peck Reita had left him with on his front porch that late Saturday afternoon.
Reita hadn’t brought up the more than friendly endearment or done anything of the sorts since then, and Kai was beginning to get more confused than ever. Reita was just his friend, right? He didn’t have to be affectionate and bombard Kai with sweet gestures such a gentle kisses to the cheek, and ruffling his hair and brushing it out of his face. They were friends, nothing more than just that… but then why was it that ever since he’d felt Reita’s thin lips press upon his cheek, that small area of skin had not stopped burning?
His mind was constantly busy, always thinking of new ways to act normal around Reita and stop staring at the blond’s pink lips. His flurry of thoughts, however, quickly came to a pause Friday afternoon when he stepped into the library and found his and Reita’s usual table at the far back occupied with two uncommon students sitting in the seats, Reita not being one of them.
“Aoi? Uruha? What are you guys doing here?” Kai didn’t want to seem panicked, but his small questions came out as just that. This was his and Reita’s spot, not theirs. He felt like they were tainting the special friendship he had built with the blond just by being here.
Aoi and Uruha looked up at him right away, Kai jumping back as they both shot up out of their seats, reaching for him and trying to force him into one of the wooden chairs. After struggling some minutes and getting reprimanded by Fuwa-san, the two taller teens had Kai down in the seat; Aoi standing in front of him with a smirk and Uruha behind him, holding him in place.
“Be sure to hold him down good, Uru-baby, he’s a squirmer and will break free.” Aoi’s instructions were followed promptly, Uruha’s already tight grip tightening even more around Kai’s thin wrists.
“AOI. What the hell is going on?” Kai’s shout was corrected by Fuwa-san, the old librarian telling them to keep it down or she’d call administration. He rolled off her vague threat, looking at Aoi with furrowed brows while trying to break free from Uruha’s seemingly unbreakable grip, “Aoi, tell him to let me go! What is this all about?” It was a whisper this time, Kai knowing he would never figure anything out if Fuwa-san kept interrupting.
“It’s intervention time, Kai. Word is around school that you’ve went and gotten yourself a little boyfriend and have yet to tell your best friends. That’s not going to work out quite well, so, spill.”
Spluttering, Kai shimmied in the seat, still failing at getting out of Uruha’s hold, “What are you talking about? I’ve never even-”
“Reita.” Kai’s face ignited in a pink flash right away at the mention of the blond, Aoi’s smirk widening as he moved in closer, poking his finger against Kai’s nose with each word spoken, “Get to talking, we’re not letting you go till you give us every single little detail.”
Biting his lip, Kai dropped his gaze to the ground, now staring at his shoes as he mumbled, “T-there’s nothing much to say…I met him in the library about a month ago. We’ve just been talking and hanging out since.” There was no point in not being straight forward, Aoi was going to end up getting it out of him anyhow.
“That’s it?” Aoi asked suspiciously.
“That’s it.” Kai countered back.
“No hugging, kissing, or fucking?” Kai was beginning to think his permanent skin tone was going to be red, his mind traveling back to Saturday and body suddenly wanting to feel the silkiness that was Reita’s lips again. Aoi gasped, his hand coming up over his mouth, “Oh my god, Kai. You slept with him?”
“W-what? NO!” His head shot up, abnormally large eyes staring at Aoi in pure horror.
“Then you kissed him or something? I know you’re not blushing for no reason.”
Kai bit his lips again, eyes down casting, “H-he…well, Saturday…he kissed my cheek…”
“Your cheek?” Aoi snorted, throwing his hands in the air in defeat, “Jesus, Kai. You get embarrassed over the smallest things. A kiss to the cheek is nothing. And here I thought I was going to get all these nitty gritty details…I mean, it’s Reita you’re dating. The school’s biggest man-whore.”
“He’s not a whore!” Kai was so quick to defend Reita’s reputation that he hadn’t even bothered to correct Aoi on their status being merely friendship, which of course had Aoi’s features sparkling in delight, he looking equivalent to a devious cat as he leaned in and whispered another question.
“So you two are dating?”
“No!”
“But, you want to be dating him, right?” Kai just went silent. “I knew it. It’s a good thing I had Ruki and Kaolu kidnap him to give him an intervention of his own-”
“YOU WHAT?” Kai’s scream was Fuwa’s final misgiving, the librarian picking up the phone and telling the three teens they had two minutes to get out before administration showed up.
Uruha’s hold was finally vanquished, Aoi patting Kai’s shoulder and grinning, “No worries, they’re in the music room carefully interrogating him. No harm will come to your precious Rei-chan.”
Giving Aoi no more time to tease him, Kai jumped up, grabbed his bag, and ran out of the library, his feet taking him down the hall, to the right, and through the double doors of the music room.
His breathlessness was masked by the heavy door smacking into the wall, eyes scanning the room and finding only one sole figure carefully plucking away at one of the acoustics. That mentioned figure looked up, offering him a soft smile, before setting the guitar down.
“Kai, I wasn’t expecting you see you here. I just met a couple of your friends, they sure are…interesting characters…”
Kai approached the blond, still flushed and heart beating abnormally fast from his run, and of course from simply being in the presence of Reita, “I’m so, so sorry Rei. I don’t know what they were thinking and-”
“Its fine, Kai.” Reita smiled again, wrapping his arm around Kai’s shoulders and beginning to walk them towards the expanse of floor to ceiling window the music room had to offer, “Besides, they made me realize something…”
“W-what’s that?” Kai could feel Reita’s warmth taking over his own body, he practically melting in the heavenly half embrace and the strong smell of cedar.
“That you like me as much as I like you.”
Kai went completely stiff, mouth open and eyes in their usual wide stance, staring as Reita smiled that damn cutesy smile at him. “What are…what’re trying to say, Rei?”
The arm around his shoulders sunk to the small of his back, pulling him closer so Reita’s mouth grazed right past his cheek, words whispered across the shell of his ear, “I’m saying, screw hanging out after school today. How about I take you on a date instead?”
Reita’s flat, soft hair was brushing against the side of his face, Kai only able to see the ends of blond locks. No eyes, no smile, no anything that could possibly distract him. His heart was beating a million miles an hour, but he still somehow felt relatively calm, his next question coming out nice and clear with no sign of stutter, “Are you asking me to be your boyfriend?”
Reita chuckled deeply right in his ear, his lips grazing the shell before he pulled away, once more showing Kai his smiling face which took away any control of calm Kai had had just moments ago, “No, not quite yet, just a date for now…but I’m sure it won’t take me long to get around to asking you to be my Julia.”
The laughter that was pulled out of Kai was pure and innocent and real. No matter how nervous Reita made him, he still always made him feel calm in the same sense. The blond was the only one who could and would joke around with him in the way Kai deemed best – book references. And it didn’t surprise him at all that Reita had taken it upon himself to tie in a reference from his favorite novel in the moment of asking him out…It’s just who Reita was.
“You do realize Winston’s and Julia’s relationship was illicit, right? And that Julia was kind of… dependent on…sex?” He whispered his final word, a bubbly feeling working its way up in the pit of his stomach.
For the billionth time since they’d met, Reita ruffled his hair, smiling deviously, “You don’t have me fooled, Kai-chan. It’s always the quite ones who are the least innocent. I know that somewhere deep down inside, you have a sex drive that out does Julia’s by a few good miles.”
And with that statement, Kai’s blush was back at full force.
“Soo,” Reita continued, “I’ll pick you up from your house at 8? I’ll be sure to step in and say hi to your mom…she seems to have taken a liking to me. Mother like son, ne?”
With another ruffle of hair and brilliant smile, Reita pressed his lips to Kai’s temple, before scurrying off with a wave, shouting to Kai to dress casual.
Kai was left frozen in his spot, trying to decide if he should thank Ruki and Aoi or kill them.

Author's Note: *sighs* I WAS going to give you guys two parts today; this and the actual date, but I was out of my house all day yesterday and found no time to write. Soo, yeah, this is it unless I get unlazy today and decide to write some more ^^;

I can never go past a cutie pie Kai, like, that's just not something I can do. So, it goes without saying that I love Kai in this one. He' just so freakin' adorable and innocent! But, I have to agree with Rei-chan, the quiet ones are always least innocent >:D
I can't wait to read the date chapter. I'm holding out for when they kiss! I think that'll be the death of this poor girl, I feel like I may melt and then my gravestone will read "Cause of death: Way too much Reikai fluff" xD
Anyways, dearest. This was an awesome thing to wake up to (it's like 8am here), so thank you for that. I can't wait for more <3
