New Beginnings

Snow fell at a peaceful rate, decorating their dark, winter coats in a layer of wan flakes as they walked hand in hand to the destination Yutaka could barely remember visiting even as a child. Ruki’s soft fingers wrapped warmly around one of his mitten clad hands, as the other held a vibrant red bouquet of frosted roses. They walked slowly, steps in synch and complete silence surrounding them. The winter air gusted about, sending chills through their shivering bodies and dusting their lips a mute color of pale blue. Colorful lights reflecting from buildings of all shapes and sizes decorated the evening sky, setting the atmosphere for the celebratory night that would soon be bringing in the New Year.

Rounding a corner, Yutaka could feel his heart beat stiffen; almost freezing in his chest. They were only two blocks away, and the prospect of his arrival and having opted into doing something he knew he should have done years ago sent him into a slight panic. However, the panic began to numb some upon remembering the quote his instructor had scratched across the board right before he’d taken his final test in order to obtain his general education development certificate just a few mere days ago.

“The truth is, unless you let go, unless you forgive yourself, unless you forgive the situation, and unless you realize that the situation is over, you cannot move forward.”

Those words had played on repeat in Yutaka’s head over and over again as he easily filled his sheet with answers he was quite confident in. The quote itself was so simply put together, so easy to understand, but the understanding, the meaning it held, ran deeper than those few words could possibly ever express. It was his life in a nutshell, and as far as Yutaka had made it throughout his weeks of being back in Ruki’s power of trust, the brunette knew there was one thing that he was clinging onto that he needed to finally let go of so there was absolutely no dwelling on issues that would cause hindrance to their future.

Freezing outside of the ebony, gothic fence, he lingered his doe eyes up, looking at the scenery before him. Chipping gray monuments coated in thin layers of snow went on for what seemed like miles, and for a second, Yutaka wondered if he would ever be able to find the one and only one he ever wished to lay his eyes upon. He stared and stared, time becoming a variable that remained at constant as his eyes dusted over each and every memorial that graced the ground’s presence.

A tender squeeze on his hand tore his gaze from the sight, instead focusing on the sea colored eyes next to him. Ruki’s lithe fingers reached up and brushed some frail, mocha locks from his face, placing the soft strands behind the younger’s ear. “You ok?” The question was like velvet falling from Ruki’s full lips. It was reassurance in a précis and Yutaka simply loved how much Ruki could express in just a short question.

Yutaka squeezed back Ruki’s hand just as tenderly, answering the nurse’s question with a silent nod. Ruki continued to gaze at the younger brunette, arching his head some so he could brush his cool lips at the corner of Yutaka’s mouth. “Do you want me to wait here or go in with you?” The words were mumbled against Yutaka’s skin, warm breaths ghosting across his face as Ruki brought him into a light hug.

Yutaka mimicked Ruki’s actions, only he buried his face in Ruki’s soft, blond waves, inhaling the sweet scent mixed with menthol. “If you don’t mind, I’d like you to come with me. I think she’d really like to meet you.”

Ruki hummed some, hands massaging the small of Yutaka’s back. “You just want to show me off, don’t you?”

A barely there chuckle fell from Yutaka’s lips, the sound being muffled against Ruki’s neck. “Of course.”

“Alright,” Ruki pulled away, re-interlacing their hands. “Let’s go, then.”

With another nod of his head, Yutaka allowed Ruki to lead him into the dark cemetery, their hands still grasped tightly together.

They walked the curved paths, none of this looking familiar in Yutaka’s mind. After all, it had been fourteen years since he’d last been here, placement was bound to be fuzzy. Their foot prints imbedded into the snow as they continued to walk, leaving a trail of their lively presence behind in such a solemn place. After what seemed like forever, Ruki came to a sudden stop and looked back at Yutaka from over his shoulder, pointing with his chin downwards to one of the grave markers. Yutaka, again, nodded his head and slowly released Ruki’s hand, allowing the blond to step some feet back as he gracefully fell to his knees and laid his eyes upon a name and inscription that was almost unfamiliar to him.

Emiko Uke
Loving wife and mother. Taken from this world too early. May we meet again in another life.

Leaning the flowers against the tomb, he reached out with a shaky palm and lightly traced the lettering, a ping of anger swarming through him as he continued to re-read the few words decorating the ash-gray stone. Hiroshi had been the one to pick out the words that his mother would forever be marked with in what was left of her existence in the world. Hiroshi, the man who had been the one to actually take everything from her. He was the one who vanished her from this world too early; not sickness, not her own self, but Hiroshi, and seeing those carefully picked words splayed so casually across her resting place made Yutaka want to scream. It just wasn’t right. His mother would never see any justice and it was partially his fault. Why did it take him so long to realize what had actually happened to her? Why couldn’t he have been older than his mere age of four so he could actually protect her? Why…why?

Warm hands laxed onto his shoulders, his peripheral vision spotting Ruki behind him, offering him silent support. Taking a deep breath and closing his eyes for barley a few seconds, Yutaka released a shuttering breath, his courage still attempting to find his weak voice.

“H-hi, mom. It’s been a while, hasn’t it?” It was inevitable, the crackled husk which laced his voice. “I didn’t mean to take so long to come see you, but life has been kind of hectic since you’ve been gone.” A desperate chuckle followed and Yutaka slowly brought up the back of his mitten to his cheek to wipe away the lone tear which he didn’t realize had escaped until he felt the cool breeze against the reddened skin.

Ruki’s encouraging hold never once lifted off him.

“I promise I’ll come visit more often now. I’ll try and make up for all those years I left you here by yourself.” A pause as his voice softened; words forming. “Mom? …I’m so sorry.” He couldn’t cry. The last time he’d seen his mother, he had been smiling; excitedly celebrating his birthday. That’s how he wanted her to remember him, not a blubbering mess. But still...sometimes no matter how hard one tried, they still failed; Yutaka's tear ducts soon opening and releasing all that pent up anguish.

“Please, you have to understand, I didn’t know. I was just a kid, I didn’t know how much of a monster he was…” His pleads became shrill, frantic. Chest heaving heavily and gasping for breath, face red and not an inch that wasn’t drenched in salty liquid. “Please, mom…just please understand that…if-if I would have known…I would have helped you…I would have honored your memory better.” Justice. I would have found you justice. “I would have saved you…”

Bending forward and breaking from Ruki’s grip, his face practically buried itself in the snow as he bowed and begged his mother for forgiveness. The liquid grief he’d been holding back flooded, it melting light piles of snow beneath him.

Strong arms soon encompassed his slightly trembling body, holding his weak, distressed frame and whispering a soft ‘Shhh’ across his heated ears. The soothing sound having an almost instantaneously calming effect on him as Ruki rocked their closely connected bodies back and forth and sat the brunette in the pit of his lap, the blond brushing through his damp mocha streaks, a tender kiss being placed on his temple as the soothing sounds continued.

“I’m sure she understands, kid. She loved you, there’s no way she wouldn’t.” Because honestly, Ruki couldn’t understand how someone could not love Yutaka, not any more, at least.

For time unknown, Yutaka remained in his bowed position, only able to see the snowy ground. His forehead was freezing from resting in the snow fall, but he couldn’t help but still feel warm as Ruki’s soft body continued to rest over his back, those strong arms wrapped firmly around his waist, and plush lips resting right by his ear.

Breaths and sniffles falling from a hiccupping pattern to almost non-existent, Yutaka carefully dislodged himself from his bowing position; Ruki’s own body carefully lifting, but never once breaking contact. As the pair landed back on their knees, Ruki’s stomach was still right against Yutaka’s back, hands still firmly around his thin waist.

Head falling back heavily against Ruki’s chest, Yutaka’s chocolate eyes refused to leave the sight of his mother’s grave. And for a while, that silence continued; Yutaka’s soft breaths being the only dull sound filling the air, as Ruki’s reassurance continued to shadow.

As the minutes passed and Ruki began one of his comforting hums, Yutaka’s body grew less tense, until finally he was able to tear his gaze away from his mother’s eternal resting place and meet Ruki’s blues. He softly, almost chastely, leaned forward and delicately placed his lips upon the blond’s, pulling back not even a second later. It was an act of appreciation, and he knew Ruki would understand.

“Go ahead and start heading back to the parking garage, I’ll catch up with you in a minute.” Yutaka gave him a questioning look, but all Ruki did in turn was take out his pack of cigarettes and a lighter, shaking the items in front of the brunette’s view. “Need a quick cigarette break before I have to endure hours of being around Yuu.”

Yutaka distanced himself from Ruki, beginning to slowly walk away. “You said you were going to quit.” A teasing reprimand and a look over his shoulder, which caused Ruki to grin, as Yutaka completely ignored the slight insult Ruki had just provided his best friend.

“I will, after the New Year, I swear.” And he showed Yutaka his crossed fingers, only to watch as the younger continued in his walk out of the cemetery gates and began heading back to the car.

Once Yutaka was completely out of view, Ruki shoved the two items back into his coat pocket and turned back to the grave Yutaka had just been crying at moments before. Bending at his knees, he took one of the dozen roses from the bouquet and placed it atop the gray structure, before pausing and staring at the engravings, just as Yutaka had done. He knows how the brunette must feel about those embellished words. The pain is unexplainable and it’s one of the many reasons he’d stopped visiting his father long ago. However, after experiencing the courage Yutaka had just portrayed, after hearing the promises he made to a mother he barely remembered, Ruki made another promise; set another New Year goal for himself, that the self-restricted visits were going to come to an end. His father deserved better than that.

Still bent at the knees, Ruki clapped his hands together and bowed his head out of respect, before releasing a shuddering breath, his voice promising as he spoke.

“Uke-san, you have yourself a good kid, and I can promise you now that I’ll always keep him safe. He’s the only reason I have to live, so I’ll do whatever it takes to continue to protect him, you have my word.” He stood, offering another bow and not bothering to dust the snow from his knees, shoving his hands into his pockets. “Please, look after us if you can. I know Yutaka would appreciate it.” Without another word, Ruki began to walk off, only to turn back around right before Yutaka’s mother’s grave went out of sight. “Oh, one more thing…Happy New Year’s.”

With a one last bow, he finally left, quickly making his way to the parking garage where he found Yutaka standing outside of the car, his arms crossed over his chest and legs bouncing up and down to keep himself warm.

“About time, it’s freezing out here, Ru.”

“Why didn’t you just wait in the car?”

The brunette’s bouncing suddenly stopped, the look he sent Ruki being nothing more than a glare. “It’s locked.”

“Why didn’t you ask for the key before you left?”

“I didn’t think you’d take so long.”

“Don’t think next time, you’re never right.” A cocky grin.

“You’re a dick.” A dimpled smile.

And then Ruki replied with his usual answer of: “Love you too, kid”

With a roll of his eyes, Yutaka watched as Ruki took out the set of keys for the car and unlocked the doors with the remote, before settling into the passenger’s seat, his hands fumbling with the vents and heat levels as soon as he settled in.

As the car began to glide down the road, more and more lights of all different colors began lighting up on residential houses, the snow on the ground reflecting hues of green, red, and blue.

Sliding off his gloves, Yutaka placed his freezing hands in front of the air vent, feeling the numbness leave them, and shifted his gaze over to Ruki who was focused heavily on the slippery road.

“So, what were you really doing?”

Eyes never once leaving the road and hands placed firmly on the steering wheel, Ruki asked simply, “What do you mean?”

“Ru, come one. I’ve been around you long enough to know what you smell like after smoking. You’re missing the whole minty-mentholy scent.”

Sighing, Ruki flicked the blinker on, the car turning left and halting at a red stop light. “Fine, you want to know what I was really doing?” He flicked his blues over to Yutaka, watching as the brunette shook his head yes. “I…I had to go and throw on my super hero cape so I could save some little girl’s kitten from a tree. You should be proud of me for doing something so kind.” And there was that sarcastic humor Yutaka was used to, followed by an equally cocky grin.

Crossing his arms over his chest, he leaned back into the passenger seat, mumbling a ‘whatever’, and trying his hardest to hide the smile which wished to conjure up on his cool lips as he watched Ruki’s own full ones twitch and chuckle from the side.

When silence had taken over once again, Yutaka found himself watching Ruki, completely enthralled with the man beside him, feeling grateful and loved. “Hey…Ru?” the blond nurse hummed, keeping his gaze on the road ahead of them. Yutaka’s voice softened even more. “I…I wanted to thank you…for doing that with me. I feel lighter now. I hadn’t truly realized how never saying a proper good bye to her until now was weighing me down…so thank you.”

Humming, Ruki reached for Yutaka’s hand, entwining their fingers and raising them, kissing his knuckles. “Kid, you know you should know by now I’ll do anything and everything for you…I love you, forever.”

Yutaka simply smiled, squeezing Ruki’s hand tighter. “Love you too, Ru…”
