Truth
Takanori was only twelve years old when he met Kai.
The back and forth feud that had been going on between his mother and father for well over a year had finally come to an end; a divorce being the final outcome. It hadn’t taken him much time to decide he wanted his mother to have sole custody over him, his father seemingly ok with the one-sided decision seeing as the man had never been a large part of Takanori’s life anyways; having been the kind of parent who you only saw on birthdays and holidays. His father would always claim he loved him – something Taka knew was, and accepted as, a complete lie.
With the divorce came the clean slate for a new start, meaning as soon as everything was finalized, his newly single mother was packing up whatever she had left in the house after the divorce settlement and moved them out of the ever busy city of Tokyo to the more relaxed prefecture of Okayama.
The city of Okayama was calm, secluded, and filled with the friendliest neighbors and civilians Taka had ever met. And it was for those very reasons alone that he hated it. Everything around him seemed so fake – from the people who offered free samples of hot drinks and steamy foods as he walked down the street market in the midst of a winter night, to the ridiculously green trees and sky blue flowing rivers that would appear at the beginning of spring. It was all fabricated, all lies, and Taka was getting sick of being surrounded by nothing but untruths.
Five months into living in his new home, and boxes still sat unpacked; his room empty with the exception of his rolled out futon, a few articles of casual clothing, and his school bag plus uniform. It wasn’t until another month later that his mother’s incessant nagging about finally unloading his personal belongings finally got to him, Takanori realizing that this was it…he was stuck here. Figuring that his room could become the one place that wasn’t layered with forged livelihood, the almost teen gave into his mother’s request and filled his room, boxes stacking up in corners as the bedroom morphed into an actual living space.
And it was because he had finally listened to his mother that Taka was able to witness in person that this simulation of a town contained actual truth.
Bedroom finally set up to his liking, he folded all the moving boxes and stacked them atop of each other, getting ready to take them outside to the recycling bin. All the boxes combined stacked higher than his short stature, but Taka was only twelve and didn’t have much in the term of common sense, so instead of separating the stack into piles and making two separate trips, he decided to maneuver through the house with the pre-existing knowledge of its setup; the stack standing a good foot taller than he.
Through his room, the family room, and onto the front porch he made it safely, but then Taka completely forgot about the sloped steps which were made entirely of cement, and before he could recalculate his directions, he plummeted forwards – the flattened boxes flying out ahead of him and his chin smashing on the concrete; the taste of iron and a few chiseled teeth flowing into his mouth.
To this day, he still can’t figure out how his mother had come out and found him so quickly, but when she did, she had freaked. His small body was scooped up in her arms and a towel was lifted to his chin, Taka himself keeping it in place as he sat unperturbed in the back seat and his mother drove frantically to the hospital, he just then realizing that he should have actually taken the boxes out in two separate stacks.
The exterior injuries hadn’t been all too bad, just a few stitches to his chin. The stitches were all the hospital could do for him, Takanori having to go to a dentist the next day to have the innards of his mouth scoped out.
It was unknown at the time, but the small, family owned dentist office located ten miles from his own home would become Takanori’s place of ‘truth’ over the next five years.
He sat in a seat in the waiting room next to his mother, his short legs swaying back and forth and barely reaching the ground. The television that flashed cartoons in front of them kept him distracted, so distracted that he’d barely heard his name being called. A touch to his shoulder pulled him back to reality, and when his gaze had been torn away from the cartoon, he found before him complete sincerity.
A wide smile with perfect pearly whites, laugh lines something beyond noticeable, and an overall goofy look of shaggy hair and haphazardly loose fitting scrubs that were decorated with little puppies grinning as they brushed their teeth...the man before Takanori had looked nothing but a joke to his twelve year old set of eyes, but whoever he was, he was it – the honesty Takanori had been looking for.
The goofy looking man’s name was Kai. At the time, Kai had been twenty three years old and in his third year of University, on his way to fulfilling the eight full years it took to become a dentist. His family owned the office and he worked there part time as a dental assistant, planning to take over the family business after he finally graduated.
He had been the one to take Takanori’s x-rays the day the analytical almost teen came in, just as he’d been the one to give him his deep cleaning and schedule his appointment to come back in two weeks to get caps placed on his chipped molars.
Within that two week time period, Taka had become enthralled, his constant visits for checkups and biyearly cleanings becoming the most exciting days of his months.
Every time he went in for an appointment, Kai would always be there and he would always be the one to work on him, just as he’d always tell Takanori the greatest of stories, giving the young boy a sense of the real world Okayama deprived him of.
It was a ritual that went on for the next five years; today being no different as a seventeen year old Takanori sat in the waiting room alone. His legs now reached the ground fully and the television playing in front of him was no longer a distraction—the cold ice pack he was holding against his jaw stinging too much and bringing his mind to focus only on the pain of his throbbing mouth.
There were younger kids in the room with their parents, their wide eyes staring at him, but Takanori ignored them completely. He simply wasn’t in the mood to deal with their shit.
It was a practical god send when a young woman dressed in vibrant pink scrubs came out from the side door with a clipboard in hand, calling his name and directing him to the room where he could settle and wait till his doctor arrived to look at this weeks’ acquired damage.
The wait was about fifteen minutes before his doctor arrived, his face set in a meshed scowl as he set eyes upon a familiar mop of shaggy hair, “Kai, it’s been how many years already? Are you ever going to do something about that hair?” dropping the icepack that was on his jaw to his knee, cool fingers reached forward and rubbed strands of unkempt locks, hand pulling back in playful disgust at the supposed dryness.
Kai swatted away the younger’s hand, a smile appearing and Taka again noticing the various laugh lines, “It’s great to see you too, Taka-chan. And how many times do I have to tell you, it’s Doctor now.” His fingers wrapped around Taka’s chin, assessing the injury as he avoided the giant black and blue bruise that started at his jawline and move up to mid-cheek.
The teen hissed, the slightest contact leaving the side of his mouth throbbing, “I don’t care how many years of schooling you went through, you’re still the guy that x-rays my jaw and cleans my teeth – does that really sound like a doctor to you?”
“It may not sound like it, but that diploma on the wall over there states that I am,” he pointed to the far left wall, a framed piece of paper with the words Doctor of Dentistry printed in bold print across the middle, and sure enough, the name Kai Uke right under it.
Takanori exhaled a puff of hot breath, arms bracing himself against the seat and jaw tightening as Kai’s fingers continued to poke and prod his latest injury, “That just proves you’re an official teeth scrubber.”
“Damn straight it does, just like your bleached hair and constant bruises prove you’re an official teenage punk who can’t stay the hell out of trouble. What happened this time? Another fight at school?” Kai sat on the small stool, legs crossing at the knees and elbow digging into firm thigh as he rested his chin in the palm of his hand and gave his long time patient a look over.
Scuffing, the teen rolled his hand airily before laying his back against the high rise reclining chair, arms folding behind his head in pillow form, “Me? Get into a fight? How could you ever even put those words in the same sentence?” a grin appeared, followed by Taka pointing to his jaw, seeming rather proud, “Naah, I gave this to myself. Was masturbating so fast that my hand slipped from my dick and I accidently sucker punched myself. I should be in the book of World Records for this…”
“Taka. Don’t say that kind of shit around me,” he lifted his head from his palm, dark eyes enhanced and a pen pointing in the teen’s direction, “I’ve known you since before you even knew what masturbating was…it just sounds so wrong to hear you joke around like that.”
“Oh, I’m sorry, did I offend your virgin ears? I’ll keep my dick stories to myself next time.”
“Taka,”
“Even dick is a no-no word? For fucks sake, you act like you don’t have one of your own. How about penis? Is the medical term better for you savored doctor ears?”
“How about you stop with the stoic act and tell me how you actually got the bruise before I deny you treatment?”
“How do you even know I’ll need treatment? You haven’t bothered to actually look inside my-”
“The cap on your bottom right molar is busted loose…”
“How do you know?”
A gloved thumb was pointed back towards the wall holding the framed degree, “I told you: I’m a doctor. Now say ‘ahhh’.”
For a half an hour, Kai worked on the bleached haired teen’s mouth, being gentle when completely removing the cap and placing a new one in its place. As usual, the dentist told tales, some going as far back as his childhood while others were about his experiences in college, he claiming that Taka was going to have a blast when he started University next year. Having the excuse of Kai’s hands maneuvering sharp tools around his mouth, Taka remained completely quiet, enjoying the sound of the elder’s voice and eyes focusing heavily on the veins that would arise and make themselves prominent on the dentist’s forearm with every bend and twist of his extremely tanned limbs.
Most were afraid of the dentist, the sounds of drills going off in the background and kids screaming and crying setting a fear in them that they may be experiencing pain the second they walk into the back rooms. But, right here, right now, Taka knows this is the most relaxed he’ll be until he finds another excuse to somehow worm his way into Kai’s work schedule again.
“You’re drooling,” a cup of mouthwash was held up to him along with a paper napkin, Taka having to fight to hold back nervous splutter. It was perfectly natural for spit to accumulate while having a small procedure done, but the fact that he had just been day dreaming of how attractive the elder was had given him another reason to drool, and somehow he felt Kai knew that reason as he graced him with one of those perfect, pearly white smiles.
“Maybe I wouldn’t if you didn’t insist on shoving your entire fist in my mouth while you prod around in there like you’re trying to find some fucking sacred treasure piece,” snatching the offered items, he swished the sour tasting liquid in his mouth before spitting it out in the sink next to him and wiping any form of drivel from his face.
Kai laughed, laugh lines and small forehead wrinkles and a sunshine grin appearing on his forever honest features. Taka felt his heart speed up…just a little. “I’ll try to be more careful next time, and knowing you, there will be a next time.”
He was right. Kai was always right…because Takanori made sure he was right. He wasn’t an asshole like most of his classmates believed him to be. Those fights he got into at school weren’t intentional, but they were necessary. If a punch or two or three to the face meant he got a chance to spend anywhere between half an hour to an hour alone with his human embodiment of certainty, then so be it.
“Don’t be too sure of yourself, you cocky bastard.” And he held back a crooked grin as Kai laughed again.
“You’re all set to go,” the snap of gloves being slid off and thrown into a trash bin before a hand came up and ruffled bleached hair, “Now get home and try to make yourself look decent for tonight. I don’t want your mother to somehow blame me for your beat up appearance.”
“Tonight? What’s tonight?” slapping Kai’s hands away again, he jumped from the high rise seat, re-styling his now disheveled locks with a half frown on his lips.
With his more than usual amount of visits to the Uke’s dentistry office over the years, both families’ ended up mingling and with their homes less than a ten minute drive apart, multiple get togethers and dinners have happened under each other’s roof at least once a month for the past four years. Unenviably, at each meet up a special announcement was made – last month’s being the celebration of Kai attaining the title of Doctor.
“I don’t really know,” a shrug of the shoulders before Kai turned for the sink and began washing his hands, “My mom called your mom last night and told her she had big news to share. They argued back and forth for a good twenty minutes before deciding whose house to have it at, but…you know your mom…”
“Yeah, she’s persistent and annoying and always gets what she wants.”
“Sounds like someone I know…”
Taka scuffed, whacking Kai on the shoulder, only to receive flicks of water from Kai’s damp hands in return.
“So you guys will be at my house at what time tonight?” he asked, wiping his face of the small droplets with the sleeve of his shirt.
“Eight on the dot.”
“Great, maybe I can find a way to off myself before then.”
Another reprimand began to come from Kai’s smooth as a winter’s ocean timbre, and of course Taka listened, the dentist telling him the gatherings weren’t that bad and that he would survive. What Kai didn’t realize is Taka actually quiet enjoyed when the two families combined for an evening of fun, but he didn’t appreciate at all how Kai’s truth became tainted when around others. Those pearly whites would hide behind a straight pair of lips all night, laugh lines morphed more into those of stressed wrinkles, and his usual attire of lively scrubs turned into form fitting apparel. He always looked stiff and uncomfortable, becoming one of the thousands of deceits in Taka’s life; something that had the bleached haired teen wanting to rip his hair out.
Waving the shaggy haired brunette off, Takanori exited the office, went through the waiting room, and began his descent home, only to be stopped as soon as he turned onto the pedestrians main walk way, “Taka, wait!”
He turned, finding Kai running towards him, a small plastic bag in hand. The image was that of perfection. “You forgot your present for being such a good patient,” he held the bag out and Taka took it, not needing to look inside to know exactly what it was.
“Kai, I’m going to have enough toothbrushes to last me five life times. It’s not necessary to give me one every time you fix me up – I’ll cause you to go bankrupt.”
“Every patient gets the same gift, why would I treat you any different just because you see me more than others?”
“Because I’m not just any other patient, am I?”
“Nope,” another smile and ruffle of hair, “You’re Taka-chan…that’s why you get a tooth brush and a tube of tooth paste.”
“I feel so loved.”
“You should. After all, you’re my favorite patient.”
The warm feeling radiating in the pit of Takanori’s stomach refused to leave the entire walk home, and by the time he locked himself away in his room, that warm feeling turned unbearable. Images of Kai’s smile and strong, tanned arms came flashing before him and sooner than later he was forcing his pants to fall into a pool of cloth by his feet as he released that warmth in the form of hard, fast strokes; the feeling and taste of Kai’s gloved fingers in his mouth adding to the sensuality and sending him over the edge in no time.
Takanori was just seventeen years old when he found out Kai was more than a crush, but less than a love.
He was sitting in his room on his sprawled out futon, flipping through some random magazine while his headphones blared the latest Luna Sea release into his ears. A million and one times already his mom has told him not to listen to the tunes so loudly or he’d be deaf by the time he reached the age of forty, but a million and two time he’s told her not to host these damn dinner parties. She never listened to him, so in the end he also decided not to listen to her.
Occupied with the flipping and listening, he didn’t hear the doorbell ring, nor did he hear the company of three edge their way in through his front door, so when Kai’s head weaved its way into the crack of his sliding door, Taka nearly jumped out of his skin.
As always, the dental assistant turned doctor was wearing a stiff button up, the sleeves rolled up to his elbows formally. Shaggy hair for once was tamed and there was a smile on smooth looking lips, but it was a complete sham. Frowning, Taka removed his headphones and placed down the magazine.
“When the hell did you get here?” the color in his cheeks flushed as he watched Kai slide down the side of the wall and land on the floor, the elder sitting right next to the bundled up shirt he had used to clean himself up earlier. In his mind, he was cursing himself for his lazy teenage tendencies, for some reason believing that if Kai knew what was wrapped up in that shirt, then he would know just what images Takanori had used to jack off to.
“Eight on the dot, just like I said earlier.”
“And they’ve already managed to drain you of this much energy? You do realize it’s only 8:20, right? We still have a long ass evening ahead of us.”
“Which is why I’ve decided to escape in here for the time being. Are you ok with that?”
“Haven’t I given you the same answer every month for the past four years?” Kai’s lips quirked, as did Taka’s, and both of their half efforts equaled a whole.
Dinner was another twenty minutes later and after hearing from everyone but Kai the bickering about his bruises and how he should be more careful, the table fell unusually quiet. There was no announcement and all that was heard was the clinking of chop sticks against glassware.
After dinner, meaning a whole two bottles of wine shared between the four adults while Taka sipped on green tea later, dessert made its way onto the table top and the conversations were a lot livelier. Kai’s father went on and on about how proud he was of his only son for taking over the family business at such a young age and his own mother went along with the praise, never once mentioning anything she could be proud of Taka for. It didn’t bug him, it never did, but he could tell that Kai was bothered by the one-sided attention for the shaggy haired man wouldn’t stop fidgeting with his knuckles and constantly adverted his attention from the conversation, Takanori being his new found center piece.
He knew the attention placed on him was solely because he was the only other one not participating in the conversation, but still, it managed to make him feel special. Not only was he Kai’s favorite patient, but now his favorite distraction as well.
Eventually, Taka’s mother asked Kai’s own what the big announcement she had was, and unexpectedly, the mid-aged woman hopped up out of her seat. She stood right behind Kai, beaming happily as her hands came to rest on her son’s shoulder, “Kai’s getting married.”
Taka’s mother jumped up in excitement, rushing over to Kai to pull him into a hug and congratulate him. Kai’s father remained in his seat, looking rather smug and accomplished. But Kai…Kai sat, looking frozen but still using Taka as a distraction. Excitement was bustling all around them, but there the two of them remained, eyes locked and expressions unidentifiable.
Without excusing himself, Taka left the dining area and entered his room, not quite knowing how to explain the new warmth in his stomach. It wasn’t arousal, it wasn’t excitement, it wasn’t nerves. It was almost as unidentifiable as his and Kai’s faces had been and all he knew was right now, he felt like vomiting.
At school the next day Taka got into another fight, this time avoiding punches to the face at any cost. And every other day after that monthly dinner, he found himself in more fist fights than he could count, allowing his entire body to get blackened with bruises, but never once his face. He couldn’t afford that – he didn’t know what he would do if forced to see Kai.
Things went on like this for the next two months; school, fight, home, sleep, repeat. Somehow Taka had been able to sneak his way out of the pair of dinner dates he had missed, claiming that he had school projects to work on or he was spending the weekend at a friend’s. Of course his mother believed him because it was easy to believe anything when you lived in a town of mendacity. The get togethers he missed included the introduction of Kai’s fiancée and the opening of another dentist office down town which would be run fully by Kai after he married that summer.
The third month was coming to an end, Takanori believing he was going to get out of the gathering again, but as an excuse began leaving his mouth, his mother stopped him, insisting that he had to go no matter what.
And so he found himself outside the Uke’s place of residence at eight o’clock sharp, gnawing away at his bottom lip as if it were a teething ring. During dinner, he sat across from Kai and his fiancée, their exchanges awkward and quiet. It was then that Taka realized how uncomfortable Kai seemed next to the woman and how he avoided even the most minimal of touches with her. It was also then that he made a choice…
At school the next day, he got into another fight. However, this time he was intentionally punched in the face, and instead of going home to sleep off the pain, he went straight to Uke’s Dentistry; his mouth swollen, teeth aching, and determination high.
“Fighting again, Taka-chan?”
Just like the millions of other times, Takanori sat in the high rise seat, his eyes averting and meeting Kai’s the moment the shaggy haired dentist fully closed the door. The dopey scrubs were back; this time kittens dancing on them as they flossed, and Kai’s smile was pure. But his voice was formal and dignified and it made Taka cringe. An air between them had formed that wasn’t natural or full of its usual energy – it was back to doctor-patient and not that of doctor-friend status.
“I’ve told you before – I don’t fight. It’s just some heavy masturbation.” Sitting up properly, using his hands to push up off the recline of the chair and plant his feet on the ground.
The elder shook his head and laughed lightly at the blunt reply, not bothering to continue dragging on their usual friendly jest and instead sitting on the stool and beginning to glove his hands up. With his back to the teen, he continued in his infrequent professional tone, not noticing Takanori beginning to walk towards him. “It was nice to be able to see you at dinner last night, I’ve missed having you around. School must be keeping you real busy to prevent you from having your weekly visit with me, ne?”
It was meant to be a joke; a teasing gesture, but it made Takanori feel relieved. Kai had noticed his absence…he’d missed him. That knowledge alone made his steps increase in speed, his hand soon resting on the elder’s shoulder and turning his body to face him.
“Kai…why didn’t you tell me?” the teasing expression on Kai’s face died down, wondrous laugh lines turning into those bitter wrinkles.
“Taka, you’re bleeding. Let me fix you up real quick and then we’ll talk.” Kai stood, gloved hands reaching for the teen’s chin and tilting it back, only for Takanori to push Kai away.
“No. Tell me first.”
“Why do you even care? So what if I’m getting married?” the elder fell back onto the stool, gloves snapping as he ripped them off and threw them into the trash bin, face falling into the midst of his hands as he exhaled deeply, sounding distressed.
Why would he care? Why did he care? Kai was the more-than-a-crush but less-than-a-love idol in his life. His serenity and loyalty. Once he was married, once he was moved to the other side of town, Taka should be able to forget him, allowing him to become nothing but a fond memory in future years…but…he couldn’t. It simply wasn’t something he wanted to do.
Nagging thoughts and pain combined, all control was lost on his part. Hands flew up and pushed Kai back down onto the stool, the wheels gliding across the room until the dentist’s back hit the wall. Instantly the space between them became none, Takanori placing his arms on the wall and trapping the elder in, their faces only a breath apart as he bent at the waist and leveled them, “I care because I can see how much you don’t want to marry that skank your father has obviously picked out for you. I care because you’re my friend and I want to see you happy. I care…” he had to pause, the sentence forming on his tongue swelling it and making words hard to annunciate.
“I care…because I want you,” a small grin formed, Taka’s hands dropping down to Kai’s shoulders and the bangs resting on their foreheads connecting as the teen moved in even closer, “and just like my mother; I’m persistent, and annoying, and always get what I want.”
Kai’s eyes widened, but before he could say or do anything, Taka dipped his head and crashed their lips together, the pungent flavor of iron mixing with that of sweet mint as they tasted each other for the first time.
Takanori was seventeen years old when he found out Kai was closer to being more of a love than anything else.

Author's Note: Alright...so here's the thing, this was supposed to be a pretty long oneshot. I mean, where I left it off is an ok stopping point seeing as it leaves you with an open ending, but...yeah, I kind of want to complete it xD
So basically what I'm saying is yeah, there's going to be a second part full of all your smutty goodness and more details of how their relationship progresses and blahblah, but how fast I can type it is up to you guys.
Ok..that's really it. First part is done just in time for Ruki's birthday :3 Yaaay~.

Part 2
Author's Note: Alright...so here's the thing, this was supposed to be a pretty long oneshot. I mean, where I left it off is an ok stopping point seeing as it leaves you with an open ending, but...yeah, I kind of want to complete it xD
So basically what I'm saying is yeah, there's going to be a second part full of all your smutty goodness and more details of how their relationship progresses and blahblah, but how fast I can type it is up to you guys.
Ok..that's really it. First part is done just in time for Ruki's birthday :3 Yaaay~.
