Chapter Eight

The drops of rain beginning to trickle down felt icy cool on his sun fried skin. The summer heat Darkhan had to offer proved to be nowhere near as intense as the heat Kai was used to back home, but laying in the sun for more than eight hours at a time every day for the past week made even the big city’s mild weather feel unbearably blistering. The first day of the stakeout had been the worst. The high altitude made it feel as if he was next door neighbors with the sun, and after a twelve hour day of being atop a nearby mountain, watching the highly secured building in front of him through a pair of binoculars, every inch of his skin had been beat red and sensitive to the touch.

Sleeping that night had been beyond impossible; Kai having sat up on the old futon in the safe house most of the night, reprimanding himself for being so dimwitted as to not remember something as simple as sunblock.

The following days became easier, his body adjusting to the heat and red skin beginning to tan; blisters starting to heal. By now the skin on his back was as tough as leather, seeing as by the time he made it to what has now become his primary observatory location, the tank top he was wearing was soaked with sweat and only felt as if it were weighing him down, meaning he didn’t even hesitate to rip it off and continue his watch as minimally dressed as possible.

He only climbed to the halfway point of the mountain in order have a full clear view of the prison, and after the first three days, he had become rather accustomed. He had his bag full of small snacks and large bottles of water, his binoculars, and, of course, his tablet to take notes. Relaxed was the best way to describe how he felt up here. Observing was low risk, he didn’t have to worry about being alert and in fight mode every minute of every day. If anybody just so happened to find him up here, he would look like a tourist enjoying some of the city’s finest views; not an agent who just so happened to be memorizing the guards’ schedule from a penitentiary that was actually miles away, even if his high grade binoculars made it seem as if it were right in front of his face.

Most importantly, his time up here meant time away from Aoi.

After their encounter on the plane, the pair had been nothing but hostile to each other. Ramming shoulders into one another’s while they passed each other, mumbling threats of murder under their breaths, and shoving each other into ridged structures as they made their way to the building that would house them for the next two weeks.

However, what had been the final straw was once they’d actually reached their room at the safe house. They were only two rooms that were in the state of suitable living conditions in all the building. It went without saying that Daichi and Hiro would be sharing one room, Kai and Aoi the other. Kai had been trying to keep things civil between them at that point since their mission had officially started, so he stayed on his side and began unpacking, remaining completely quiet and paying no attention to Aoi.

And that’s when it happened.

Kai had just bent over to pick up the charger he’d dropped, and right at that very moment, a ringing all too familiar filled his ears and bits of dry wall fell down onto his head. After the ringing had subsided some, he’d looked up and found a bullet lodged in the wall just centimeters from where his head would’ve been had he been standing straight.

Instant anger raked through his body when he had turned and found Aoi with a pistol in his hand and a megawatt smirk across his lips. ‘ Ooops, sorry. Was just checking to see if it was loaded. Finger must’ve slipped,’ had been his excuse. Just like Aoi purposefully aiming his gun at him had been Kai’s excuse to come with a proposal that would keep him and Aoi separated throughout most of their duration here in Darkhan.

He made a schedule.

He took on twelve hours during the day, while Aoi tackled the remaining twelve hours during the night; the prison having a pair of eyes on it every minute, every second, of the last week and a half.

By the time Kai made is back to their room in the safe house each night, Aoi was always already gone; a fact he was more than thankful for.

He hadn’t any idea where Aoi sat about during his stakeout hours, but quite frankly, he didn’t really care, either. He’d put in his hours in the job, now it was Aoi’s turn.

Standing from his belly down position, Kai dusted dirt and strands of grass from off his stomach. Gathering his bag, he tossed his discarded shirt over his shoulder and began his hike down the mountain, letting out a blissful sigh as the rain continued to beat down on his skin, washing away the excess grime from the day.

His hour long hike seemed to pass by in a flash this evening, and in no time he was maneuvering his way through the busy and rather lively city, making his way to the far south wing where endless rows of abandoned buildings stood. Abandoned buildings always made for the best safe houses for the most obvious reasons. Desolate slabs of architect no one cared about or remembered. Gunshots could go off, brutal fights could take place, even some torturing could occur if the mission required it. Yet, they’d never be detected due to their discreet and forgotten by most location.

Soon enough he was walking up the crooked wood wrought steps to what Tora had declared their safe house in the mission’s file folder. He trekked up to the third story with care, knowing the steps could give out on him any moment. And for the first time since the mission had truly begun, Kai found himself opening the room door, finding the room occupied.

“What’re you guys doing here?”

Daichi waved enthusiastically, a cutesy smile on his lips as he blew Kai a kiss. Hiro stood from the bed dressed in all black sleek clothing, offering Kai a respectful bow. “Senior Agent Uke, I’m sorry to have barged into your room like this without permission, but Boss wanted us to speak to you as soon as you got back. He said it was crucially important”.

Kai’s heart started pounding in his chest right away. Tora never got in touch with any agent during an ongoing mission unless it was of dire importance. And everybody on the compound knew there was only one thing Kai thought to be important – Reita.

Every thought imaginable flashed through his mind, every one of them leaving him feeling sick to his stomach. This was it. This was when he would be informed Reita had finally lost his fight, that Reita was no more.

Clearing his throat, Kai pushed passed the other two agents in the room, sitting on the edge of the bed. He ran his hands through his hair, flinching as he grazed the prominent scar there. He had to get his feelings under control. He couldn’t let this blow he was about to take destroy the rest of the mission.

Looking Hiro in the eye, Kai spoke up, sounding nothing but drone. “Go on, tell me…”

Hiro’s mouth moved to speak, however, before he could form his first syllable, a bubbly laugh penetrated the air, both Hiro and Kai looking up to see Daichi holding his arms around stomach, in complete hysterics.

“You act like we’re about to tell you someone died,” the young agent continued to cackle, sitting down beside Kai and patting his thigh, “You look like a little puppy when you’re upset, no wonder boss has taking such a liking to you. You’re actually cute~.”

“Agent Daichi,” Hiro growled, pulling him up and off the bed by the arm, “Start showing some respect to your senior agents or else-”

“Or else what? You’ll punish me? You’ll spank me? Because we both know I would more than be into that~.”

Hiro continued to scowl at the younger agent, his face going red for reasons unknown. Kai could only assume it was from the anger building inside of him. However, at the moment, he hadn’t a care in the world other than to hear the news Hiro had to break to him. So he cleared his throat, stopping the other two agents stare down, grabbing Hiro’s attention.

“Mind telling me what’s going on now?” Kai asked, his voice raising a bit to express his impatience.

Hiro nodded and folded his hands over his lap, offering a polite half bow. “I’m sorry for all the interruptions, Senior Agent Uke. I’ll get to explaining now.” He stood up straight, clearing his throat and speaking clearly, “Boss has acquired information we weren’t aware of before. Apparently, the prison switches up their guards’ schedules every three months as to not allow the inmates’ time to learn their routes and attempt an escape…”

Kai’s brows furrowed in confusion momentarily, not having expected such a random bit of news. This wasn’t about Reita at all, it was about the mission. Reita was still laying back in bed at the compound’s medical wing, his condition still the same as when he left; a realization that provided Kai with both relief and anguish.

“….And may I ask what this has to do with the mission? Is it going to affect it in anyway?”

Again, Hiro simply nodded his head, letting out a sigh. “I fear so. We happened to arrive here right towards the end of the three month cycle. All the observing you and Agent Shiroyama have been doing the past week and a half will go to waste if we don’t move in early.”

“How early is early?”

“…Tonight.”

First Kai uploads a video on insta, then you give us a new UD update. THIS IS LIKE CHRISTMAS <3

As always, I was super excited to see a new update from you!! Buuuttttt

DAMN THAT AOI !

I don't like him, sorry Sam but I reeeeallyyyy don't! >_> It's one thing to be rude, but now he's trying to murder Kai?! I'M NOT HAVING IT! >:/

.... I wonder what Tora would do if he finds out~~~~ Not that Kai can't take care of himself, but it doesn't seem like he's planning on killing him :/ Though he SHOULD, grrrrrrrrrrrr.

I love Hiro and Daichi though <3 The way Hiro reacted to Daichi's "We BOTH know" comment made me think that mayyyyybe something happened?? Idk even if it hasn't, I hope it will :3 I'm rooting for Daichi's happiness <3333333

Also, MISSION TIME! Can't wait to see what happens in the next chapter! Aoi better not try anything >_> Can you tell I don't trust him, like, AT. ALL????

IT WAS LOVELY TO SEE MORE OF YOUR WRITING AGAIN! I know I keep telling you, but I've missed it! ^_^

I'M IN THE MIDST OF REPLYING TO YOUR EMAIL RN, AND TRUST ME I'M SAVING MY KAI JUMP ROPING SQUEAL FOR THAT :'DD And don't lie, this is more like Christmas Eve....Christmas would've been if I updated Unseen Solitaire for you...or gave you some Rukai :P

LOL, trust me....it's okay to hate Aoi, I know most will. He's going to be that character that most end up hating to love...which is the best kind of character in my books ;)

Ohhh, Boss man Tora ain't going to be happy, that's for sure :'D Maybe Aoi will end up being the one who gets punished instead of Daichi ;)

Hiro and Daichi have an interesting relationship for sure...annnd I'll probably get more into it later on in the story, but for now...I have to keep my mouth shut :P

Not trust Aoi? What? Why not? He's a saint <3 ;)

THAAAANK YOU AGAIN <33 I hope next time I update it'll be a better, longer chapter :P

See you keep telling me that, but I'm too busy worrying that he's going to kill Kai to fall in love with his character xD Buuut I do trust you, so I guess I'll look forward to hating/loving him :'D

PUNISH THEM ALLLLLLLLLLLLLL!

They're such a funny pairing, what with Hiro being all stoic and polite, and Daichi being... basically the complete opposite :P I like it~

HE'S THE DEVIL AND I FEAR FOR KAI BBYS SAFETY! D:

<333333333333 I've known from the start that you wanted to keep the chapters short for this fic! It suits it, I like it, doooon't worryyyy! ;D

Sam, you know your page on my phone is the ONLY page I leave up for updates? And I STILL had no clue you had updated since it had been so long HAHA! I became unemployed, getting the last of my classes in for graduation and also on the brink of almost heading into the crazy house, I was GLAD to see this short update even if I am almost a week late! Thank you for FINALLY appearing!!!
