Chapter Four

“Did you stop by to see Agent Shiroyama today?”

Kai was always amazed by how soft the tips of Tora’s fingers were when they combed through his hair and grazed his temple. And as they lay here on Tora’s office floor with papers scattered all around them and the limbs of their naked bodies intertwined, that was the sole fact he found himself focusing on.

Tora was such a powerful man. Kai could tell by staring deep and hard into his boss’s light hazel eyes that he’s seen and been through more than anybody else on this entire compound – could tell that he should be broken and rough and completely uncaring. Yet, the touch of his finger tips to his skin always made Kai feel safe and secure. It was such a contradiction that a man who’s life was hardened and shaped by his corrupt upbringing could possess such a gentle touch, just as it was a contradiction that this touch which brought about that mentioned security could make Kai’s skin crawl in nothing but disgust and self-hatred.

After leaving Aoi’s temporary residence, Kai had headed right for the compound’s gym, needing to work off some of his growing frustrations. It had been the first time he’d been in the gym since the incident and after hours on the treadmill and lifting weights, he had to force himself to stop. Not just because of the rapidly growing soreness in his body, but also because his appointment with Tora was soon.

It’d been 8 o’clock on the dot when he arrived outside of Tora’s office, knocking on the door while covered in sweat. By 8:02, he’d been dragged inside and stripped of all his clothes, Tora pinning him against a loaded bookshelf and stealing his breath with a heated kiss.

This was how things always went between them. They wouldn’t talk, they would just do, touch, feel. Tora would awaken Kai’s body with torrid heat, the smallest of touches sending Kai gasping for more.

It was an act only they truly understood; the feeling of losing everything and everyone that had ever meant anything to them connecting them at a level of appreciation only reachable when it was just the two of them alone. Work forgotten and their strong, exterior facades fading.

Bare hips grinded frantically when Tora pressed Kai’s body against his desk. Kisses were scattered down his back and a hand wrapped around his erection, Tora stroking Kai while slowly pushing in. It’d been beyond blissful, both men forgetting their worries and struggles, forgetting their pains and losses and focusing on the immense pleasure alone.

By 8:24 they’d both come and fallen onto the floor, scattering papers everywhere in their fall. And now here they were at 8:26, finally having caught their breaths and now up for light conversation.

Kai turned onto his side, facing away from Tora, but still feeling his arms wrapped possessively around his waist. The blinding lust of the moment has finally diminished, allowing Kai’s mind to settle, to fully understand that, not for the first time, he had been unfaithful. A realization that allowed cringe worthy revulsion to rack every inch of his body.

“Did you?”

Kai sighed, wanting to push Tora’s arms off of him but not really having the energy, “Did I what?”

“Shiroyama. Did you go and speak to him?”

“I did.”

“And?”

Another sigh, “And he’s a dick, that’s all there really is to it. But I couldn’t really give two shits about his personality, as long as he can do his job and back me up if need be, then this partnership will work out perfectly fine.”

A lie, but he knew it was what Tora wanted to hear.

He felt Tora press their bodies closer together, kissing across his shoulders and up neck, a breathy whisper right against his ear. “I’m sorry…”

Every muscle in Kai’s body tensed, making the impending soreness all the more notable. “Sorry for…what?”

Tora un-plastered himself from Kai’s body, laying on his back and staring up at the ceiling, his arms tucked behind his head for support. “I know this Shiroyama guy isn’t Reita, but I’ve looked over his file multiple times and he’s good. Better than anybody this division has ever seen.”

That caught Kai’s attention.

He would be lying if he admitted to not being curious about Aoi’s ranking. His physical appearance came off as strong and Kai could tell from the few scars he’d seen decorating his new partner’s body that he has been in his fair share of combat missions that had obviously been successful, otherwise he wouldn’t be here today. Then there were the facts that techies and other agents seemed to have already known about him, and he had been Kyo’s favorite agent according to Ruki. So maybe Tora was right, maybe Aoi was that good.

“If he’s so good, why did Kyo dispose of him?”

Kai moved in a bit closer to Tora, resting his chin on his chest and looking up at him with questioning eyes. That disgust was running hot through his body at initiating such intimate contact, but he had to do everything he could to try and get the information he wished to receive out of Tora.

His efforts, however, proved to be fruitless. For all Tora did was smile apologetically at him, running the tips of his fingers through his hair once more. “That, Agent Uke, is information I cannot give you and you know it. Nice try, though.” Tora placed a kiss to Kai’s lips, beginning to sit up and get dressed. “I’ll be going off compound tonight in order to speak with some higher ups about the European division. Apparently their minor slip up last week was a hell of a lot more than we ever expected and they’re in need of new recruits.”

Kai arched a brow, following Tora’s steps in getting dressed, “New recruits? Exactly how many men did they lose?”

“Thirty-four.”

“Ouch,” Kai hissed, “that’s a pretty good chunk. Are they still running missions?”

Tora shook his head, walking across the room and adjusting his wrinkled suit attire in the body length mirror, “No, they’re on temporary lock down. Which brings me to my next point. You and Shiroyama aren’t going to be getting in as much training time together as I originally had planned. Somebody needs to make up for the European divisions lull in missions, so Kyo and I are sending out are best men to do just that-”

“But I’m not your best man.”

“That’s right, you’re not. But my best man is currently in a coma in the med wing and no one’s exactly sure if, or when, he’ll be waking up. So, I’m sending out who I think is best for the job and, based on Shiroyama’s files and your kill sheet, I’d say you two are the best I have at the moment.”

Stepping into his jeans and buckling them up, Kai had to hold back an annoyed grunt and prevent his features from shifting into a disgruntled expression. He felt as if Tora was bragging about him every time he brought up his kill sheet and he despised that more so than he did smoking.

Instead of expressing his disdain out loud, Kai bit back a snappy remark, continuing to speak calmly as he began putting his shirt back on. “Okay, then. So when do we start?”

“You’ll have a month total of training together with Shiroyama. Then, after your training session is up, you’ll both be sent out on a trial missions throughout Eastern Asia. If you guys work well together and have success with that, well then…” Tora paused, his hands on the tie wrapped around his neck and adjusting it, eyeing Kai consciously through the mirror, “Well, you’ll be sent to Europe….for a month and a half.”

Kai’s eyes tripled in size, meeting Tora’s light hazel’s through the mirror – the current anger he felt flooding his system making his voice come out rough and rigid. “You’re kidding me, right? An extended mission, with a brand new partner, in territory we’re not even sanctioned to run missions in? That’s just asking for a disaster to happen. The European division is supposed to take care of missions in Europe, while we take care of the ones in Asia, that’s how it works.”

Clearing his throat and facing Kai, any and all acceptance Tora usually held for Kai seemed to be nonexistent, the taller of the two crossing the room and towering above Kai, looking him straight on.

Kai could see the fire burning in his eyes.

“No, Kai. That’s how it usually works. But I just got done telling you, the European division is in shambles, they need our help. They were kind enough to send over some rather talented recruits when we needed the help, so I say it’s about time we return the favor, wouldn’t you agree?”

Kai felt his breath hitch in his chest. He knew exactly which recruits Tora was speaking of.

Reita and Ruki.

Reita had been the European division’s top agent for ten years, having started work there when he was merely 18. When a crisis occurred at the very compound Tora ran, just as Tora had agreed to do now, the European division had sent over their best of the best.

In the end, Reita had gotten what he wanted. He was originally only supposed to stay in Japan for three months. However, during those three months, something changed. Reita’s hatred for Kai had grown into something more and at the end of his original stay, Reita insisted on an official transfer so he could work under Tora permanently.

Tora bringing up Reita’s transfer was the biggest guilt trip around, and Kai knew Tora knew just as such. Because if it weren’t for Kai, Reita would’ve never asked to officially be transferred over, and if it weren’t for his transfer, Reita may very well be…better off than he was now.

Swallowing hard and deep, Kai nodded his head, voice barely audible as he responded, “Yes, sir. You’re right. We do owe it to them. I’ll do my best to ensure mine and Agent Shiroyama’s missions run as smoothly as possible.”

Turning away from the mirror, Tora gave a dismissive nod of the head. “That’s good to hear. Now, you may be on your way, Agent Uke. I’ll see you in my office again same time next week, correct?”

“Yes, sir…”

“Oh, Kai?”

He faced his boss one more time, doing his best to keep his expression blank. “Yes?”

“Would you like me to pick something up for you while I’m off compound? I notice you seem to be running low on clothes that fit you properly…”

Kai had to force himself not to roll his eyes. Did Tora really believe he cared about fitted clothes with all that was going on? Besides, Kai stopped believing in dressing himself well after his first year on the job. Anything he acquired was just going to end up tattered and stained with blood anyways.

“No thanks, Tora. Just the usual will be good…”

Tora smiled while nodding his head, moving to his desk to grab his cell phone and a folder of papers, “Alright then. It’ll probably be late by the time I get back so I’ll send a guard up to the room with it. You’re dismissed.”

Not taking even a spare moment, Kai turned out the door, running on auto-pilot. Usually, upon leaving Tora’s office, he felt a mix of feelings good and bad. That said, today the bad were dominating, leaving Kai with a heavy heart, making each and every one of his motions feel sluggish.

It felt like years had passed by the time he made it to the cafeteria, picking up two trays of questionable looking dinners and paying a bit extra in order to attain two desserts for Ruki. He knew the techie would probably just knit pick at the dinner he said he would bring back for him, so he figured it wouldn’t hurt his wallet to purchase a second round of dessert for the young blond. After all, Ruki had a natural sweet tooth. Never once had Kai seen him say no to anything with excessive amount of sugar in it. So, even if it wasn’t the healthiest, as least Ruki would be eating something.

Upon entering back into the bedroom, Kai was unsurprised to find Ruki still pounding away at the keys on the keyboard, clearing his throat in order to catch the young blond’s attention. “Ru, come on. Take a break for a few and come have dinner with me out on the balcony.”

“Just give me half an hour more-”

Ruki. You’ve been working all damn day, just take a twenty minute break and eat with me, please.”

Kai wasn’t trying to sound needy, but he knew that was how he was coming across at the moment. Because honestly, Tora had overwhelmed him with too much information at once and now Kai just needed somebody to talk to. Normally that somebody was Reita and yes, Kai knew he could go to the medical wing and vent to Reita all he wanted to, but for once, he’d like an actual response – something he knew he wasn’t going to possibly get from Reita ever again.

Ruki turned away from the desktop screen, his ocean blue’s eyeing Kai with concern and voice soft, “Kai…what’s wrong? Did that Shiroyama asshole do something to you?”

Kai shook his head, pointing a thumb at the sliding glass doors which led to their small balcony, “Other than be an asshole? No. Come on, I just want to talk to you for a bit…let’s eat.”

They ended up huddled right next to each other on the balcony, eating in silence for a good few minutes – a small smile appearing on Kai’s lips when he saw Ruki ignoring the main entrée and going right for the small slither of extra chocolate cake he’d purchased for him.

The air surrounding them was moist, making their skin feel damp and sticky. Light chatter from the guards paroling the grounds beneath and the sounds of crickets in the surrounding woods could be heard, masking the awkwardness of their current silence – Kai able to tell by how fidgety Ruki has become that he wanted to ask something but was unsure how to.

Finally, when all the small background noises fell silent around them, Kai leaned back some, using the flats of his palms as support and sighing softly. “I…I went and saw Tora today after I visited Shiroyama…”

“I know,” Ruki said shyly, slowly moving his hand so it rested over Kai’s own, “You told me before you left you were going to see him…to talk about your reinstatement, right? How’d that go?”

More sinking guilt ran through Kai’s veins, making him shudder, his entire body internally shaking. Ruki, no matter how much he poked and teased, was forever innocent. He would constantly bait Kai about Tora’s undeniable infatuation with him, just as everybody on compound did. But the thing was, where it wouldn’t shock everybody else to find out that Kai had indeed been sleeping with Tora these past months, Ruki would be taken aback and nauseated. Because the petite blond believed Kai to be a role model agent and ideal romantic partner.

Ruki would never believe in a million years that Kai was unfaithful.

Would never believe that Kai’s good guy act was just that, an act.

That in reality, he was no better than the scum he used to cuff and lock away while working at the bureau.

“It wasn’t really so much to speak about my reinstatement. It was more along the lines of Tora telling me about some…changes that are going to occur rather soon.”

Ruki quirked a brow, “Changes? Isn’t getting a new partner more than enough change?”

Kai chuckled wryly, “I wish that was all, but no. Boss…he’s already planning to possibly send Shiroyama and I out on an extended in Europe...”

“O-oh…”

Kai didn’t need to even look up the see the unsettled expression on Ruki’s face.

For the last time Kai had been sent out on an extended, Ruki lost a brother. And now Kai knows Ruki fears that he’ll lose him, the only person – the only connection— he has left to Reita.

“Yeah...” another wry chuckle, Kai falling back and looking up at the sky, just able to detect the moon beyond heavy clouds, “Oh…”

He closed his eyes; blood pooling around his ankles, Reita pale, whispering words he couldn’t comprehend. Watching the surgeons work on him, experiencing Reita leaving this world twice before he was finally stabilized. Feeling the deafening ache in his chest when he was informed that Reita wasn’t waking up.

That he was alone in this world he would never understand.

Author's Note: Hiya there everybody <33 I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who commented on the last chapter, it really means a lot to me! I'm sorry I never got back to you guys but, as I mentioned before, I had family down and they just left me feeling like x____x and I figured you'd rather me waste the last of my energy to get this out rather than reply to comments :P

I'm not exactly 100 percent happy with this chapter like I was a few weeks ago, but that probably has to do with the nasty message I received a few days ago on tumblr that just ripped away any and all confidence I had. So yeah, whoever that anon was, thanks a lot :'D

Annnd last but not least, seeing as I've not found it in me to write on this fic like i was supposed to, I don't know when the next chapter will be out. Hopefully it won't take TOO long. But weekly updates probably won't be happening anymore cause my brain is just dead at the moment to be completely honest. Oh! And I see sooo many good updates from other authors but I can't even bring myself to read rn...so I'm just gonna go crash and see if I can catch up on reading in the AM :P

Anyways, hope you enjoyed! Because yeah...I was excited about introducing Tora and Kai's relationship :D
